Castore
Castore is a striking glass and marble table designed in 1975 by renowned Italian architect, sculptor, and designer Angelo Mangiarotti for Sorgente dei Mobili.
A round glass top rests delicately on a solid marble pillar, creating a compelling contrast between visual lightness and material weight. At the center of this composition is a seemingly minimal element: a small marble bowl placed atop the glass surface. Visually, Mangiarotti suggests that this bowl alone secures the top in place, which is an elegant illusion characteristic of his sculptural approach to design.
Both the pillar and the bowl feature soft, rounded edges, adding a tactile gentleness to the robust aesthetic of the marble. The bowl itself is removable, functioning as a standalone object if desired. However, when left in place, it becomes an integral part of the table’s composition, where its form is reflected in the glass.
